He was asked:
“Does the deceased speak in his grave?”
He replied:
As for the question of whether the deceased speaks in his grave, the answer is that he does speak, and he may also hear whoever addresses him. It is established in an authentic hadith that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“They hear the sound of their sandals.”
It is also established from him in an authentic report:
“The deceased is questioned in his grave. He is asked, ‘Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet?’ Allah keeps those who believe firm with the firm word, and he says, ‘Allah is my Lord, Islam is my religion, and Muhammad is my prophet.’ He is also asked, ‘What do you say about this man who was sent among you?’ The believer says, ‘He is Allah’s servant and Messenger. He brought us clear proofs and guidance, so we believed in him and followed him.’ This is the meaning of His words, Most High: ‘Allah keeps those who believe firm with the firm word in this life and in the Hereafter.’”
It is authentically reported from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that this verse was revealed concerning the punishment of the grave. Likewise, the hypocrite speaks, saying, “Ah, ah! I do not know. I heard people saying something, so I said it.” He is then struck with an iron sledgehammer and lets out a scream that everything except human beings can hear.
It is also established in an authentic hadith that he said:
“Were it not that you might stop burying one another, I would ask Allah to let you hear the punishment of the grave as I hear it.”
It is further established in an authentic report that he called out to the polytheists on the day of Badr, after casting them into the well, and said:
“You do not hear what I say any better than they do.”
The reports concerning this are numerous and widespread. And Allah knows best.
