well-pleased and pleasing to Him.”

“Then enter among My servants.”

“And enter My Paradise.”

Allah, Most High, also said:

“Say, ‘The Angel of Death entrusted with you will take you; then to your Lord you will be returned.’”

The angel can take only something that exists in its own right; an accident inhering in something else cannot be taken. Thus, the life inhering in the body is not taken; rather, it vanishes and ceases to exist, just as the body’s movement and perception cease to exist.

Allah, Most High, said concerning the believers:

“Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, ‘My Lord, send me back, so that I may do righteous deeds in what I left behind.’ No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.”

His words, “Send me back,” are a request for the soul to be returned to the body, as He said in Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah:

“Then why, if you are not subject to recompense, do you not bring it back, if you are truthful?”

This makes clear that the soul exists and departs from the body at death. Allah, Most High, said:

“It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.”
