demonstrated by the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—in the hadith of “the red mountain,” the hadith concerning “prostration,” and others, just as obedience to one’s parents is obligatory. Every obligation to obey her parents has passed to her husband, and no obligation to obey her parents remains upon her. The former obligation arises from ties of kinship, and the latter from covenants, as we shall explain, Allah willing, when discussing these two great principles.

He—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked:

Concerning a woman who has married and is no longer under her parents’ authority: which is better for her—being dutiful to her parents or obeying her husband?

He answered:

Praise be to Allah, Lord of all worlds. When a woman marries, her husband has a greater claim over her than her parents, and her obligation to obey him is more binding. Allah Most High says:

“So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in their husbands’ absence what Allah would have them guard.”

It is reported in a hadith that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“This world is an enjoyment, and its best enjoyment is a righteous wife: when you look at her, she pleases you; when you command her, she obeys you; and when you are absent, she guards herself and your wealth for you.”

In Abū Hātim’s Sahīh, Abū Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“If a woman performs her five daily prayers, observes her month of fasting, guards her chastity, and obeys her husband, she will enter through whichever gate of Paradise she wishes.”

In al-Tirmidhī’s collection, Umm Salamah reported that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Any woman who dies while her husband is pleased with her will enter
