He—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—was asked:
A group of people visited a man so that he could offer them something to eat. He brought out the table with bread on it, then went away to fetch the food to accompany it. One of the guests said, “When bread is served, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, ‘Do not wait for anything else.’” So they ate the bread. When the accompanying food arrived, there was no bread left to eat with it. They said to him, “You have lied about the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and made this man bear the expense of the bread.” Is the hadith he mentioned authentic or not?
He answered:
Praise be to Allah. Nothing concerning this has been reported from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Rather, this is something some people say. Its meaning is to encourage contentment: when bread is served, one should be satisfied with it, neither waiting for anything else nor asking the host for anything more, for this is part of honouring him.
However, if they are waiting for food to be brought to accompany the bread, and eating the bread would leave that food to be eaten on its own, then the proper thing is to wait so that they can eat them together. And Allah knows best.

If most of a man’s wealth is lawful, but a small portion of it is doubtful, and he offers someone hospitality or invites him, should that person accept or not?
