Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

And Allah Most High says:

“And when Satan made their deeds seem fair to them”

through to His words:

“Indeed, I fear Allah, and Allah is severe in punishment.”

Thus, He tells us that Satan fears Allah. Punishment is imposed only for neglecting a command or committing something forbidden; the command at issue here is not assent to the truth.

Furthermore, the disobedience of Iblīs, the father of the jinn, did not consist in denying the truth. Allah commanded him to prostrate, and he knew that Allah had commanded him. There was no messenger between him and Allah whom he could accuse of falsehood. When he refused to prostrate before Adam, Allah punished him severely. Hence the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“When the son of Adam prostrates, Satan withdraws, weeping”—and the rest of the hadith.

Allah Most High also says in the account of Solomon:

“And for Solomon We subjected the wind, whose morning journey was a month and whose evening journey was a month”

through to His words:

“the punishment of the blazing Fire.”

This includes His command that they obey Solomon. Allah Most High says of Iblīs that he disobeyed; He does not say that he denied the truth. He also says concerning the jinn:

“O our people, we have heard a Book revealed after Moses”

through to His words:

“And whoever does not respond to Allah’s caller cannot escape Him on earth”—and the rest of the verse.

They were therefore commanded to respond to Allah’s caller, who is the Messenger. Responding and answering the call mean obeying the commands and prohibitions. This is the worship for which jinn and humans were created, as Allah Most High says:

“I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.”

As for the claim that “worship” is the innate knowledge present within them, that this constitutes faith, and that it is found in jinn and humans alone: if this were so, there would be no unbeliever among jinn or humans. Yet Allah has declared the unbelief of Iblīs and others among the jinn and humans. Allah Most High says:
