He—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—was asked:
Concerning a man whose companion died while engaged in jihad: he gathered his companion’s estate over a period of three years, with considerable effort. Is he entitled to remuneration for this?
He replied:
If he is an executor, he is entitled to whichever is less: the customary remuneration for someone like him or what suffices for his needs. If he was compelled to undertake this work, he is entitled to the customary remuneration for someone like him. If he undertook it voluntarily without remuneration, he is not entitled to any payment; rather, his reward is with Allah. If he performed work that had to be done, without intending to do so gratuitously, there is disagreement over whether he must be remunerated. The stronger view is that he must.
