He—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—was asked:
A woman of sound judgment died, leaving a father, a mother, and a husband. Her father took her household effects and gave the heirs nothing. What is the ruling?
He replied:
This cannot be accepted from him. Rather, whatever property was in her possession belonged to her and passes to her heirs. Even if he bought it himself and provided it for her as her bridal trousseau in the customary manner, this constitutes a transfer of ownership to her. He therefore has no right to take it back after her death.
He was asked:
If someone is given a hunting dog and gives the donor a gift in return, may the donor benefit from that gift?
He replied:
If he gave the trained dog without intending to receive anything in exchange or seeking a return for his gift, but simply to honour the recipient, and the recipient subsequently gave him something, there is nothing wrong with that.
