And the Most High said:
“Those whom they invoke besides Him have no power of intercession, except those who testify to the truth knowingly.”
And the Most High said:
“You have come to Us alone, just as We created you the first time, leaving behind all that We bestowed upon you. We do not see with you your intercessors whom you claimed were partners with Allah concerning you. All ties between you have been severed, and what you used to claim has deserted you.”
And the Most High said:
“Or have they taken intercessors besides Allah? Say, ‘Even though they possess nothing and have no understanding?’”
“Say, ‘All intercession belongs to Allah. His is the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will be returned.’”
“When Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion. But when those besides Him are mentioned, they rejoice.”
And the Most High said:
“Voices will be humbled before the Most Merciful, and you will hear nothing but a faint sound.”
“On that Day, intercession will benefit none except one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and whose words He approves.”
And the man mentioned in Surah Yā Sīn said:
“Why should I not worship the One who created me, and to whom you will be returned?”
“Should I take gods besides Him? If the Most Merciful intends harm for me, their intercession will avail me nothing, nor can they rescue me.”
“Then I would surely be in clear error.”
“I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me.”
This, then, is the intercession that the polytheists attributed to angels, prophets, and righteous people, even making images of them and saying: “Seeking intercession through their images is seeking intercession through them.” Likewise, they went to their graves and said: “We seek their intercession after their death so that they may intercede for us with Allah.” They made images of them and worshipped them in this way. Allah and His Messenger rejected this intercession, condemned the polytheists for it, and declared them disbelievers on account of it.
Allah the Most High said concerning Noah’s people:
“They said, ‘Never abandon your gods; never abandon Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, or Nasr.’”
“They have already led many astray.”
Ibn ʿAbbās and others said: “These were righteous men among Noah’s people. When they died, the people remained at their graves; then they made images of them and worshipped them.” This is well known in works of Quranic commentary and hadith
