saying:

“But whoever is patient and forgives—that is indeed a matter requiring firm resolve.”

The Quran expresses comprehensive meanings in few words.

Similarly, near the end of Sūrat al-Baqarah, He mentions three categories of people in transactions undertaken by the parties’ own choice: the gracious, the unjust, and the just. The gracious person gives charity; the unjust person takes usury; and the just person sells. Thus, He sets out the rulings governing charity, usury, sales, and debt transactions.

Anyone who imagines that forgiving forfeits or diminishes his right is mistaken, ignorant, and misguided; rather, forgiveness makes his reward greater. Likewise, anyone who imagines that forgiving brings him humiliation while granting the wrongdoer honor and dominance over him is mistaken. As is established in the Sahīh and elsewhere, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“There are three things I would certainly swear to: Allah only increases a servant in honor through his forgiving others; charity does not diminish wealth; and no one humbles himself before Allah but Allah raises him.”

Thus, the truthful and trustworthy Prophet made clear that Allah only increases a servant in honor through his forgiving others, that charity does not diminish wealth, and that no one humbles himself before Allah but Allah raises him. This refutes the assumptions of those who follow conjecture and their own desires: that forgiveness humiliates them, charity diminishes their wealth, and humility lowers their standing.

In the two Sahīh collections, ‘Ā’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:

“No blow was ever struck by
