to confront him with a sword. Had they not held him back, he would have struck him with the sword.
In the two Sahīh collections:
“Whoever is killed defending his property is a martyr.”
He was asked:
About the wrongfully seized property he had presented to the ruler, and so forth.
He replied:
As for the wrongfully seized property he presented to the ruler, and whatever he gave him, he should give an equivalent amount in charity on its owner’s behalf if he does not know who the owner is. The same applies to whatever he gave the emir as a gift or for which he compensated him.
He—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked:
About a man who grinds grain in mills belonging to the ruler, which he leases despite knowing that some of them have been wrongfully seized; and about a man who works on the ruler’s crops: is his share of the crop lawful, and are the first man’s earnings from the mill lawful?
He replied:
As for the ruler’s lands and mills that are not known to have been wrongfully seized, a person may work on a sharecropping basis in return for a share of the crop. He may also lease them or work in them for wages
