Let us believe that Allah has eternal, uncreated names and attributes, conveyed in His Book and reported by the Messenger to his Companions in narrations transmitted by trustworthy narrators and authenticated by reliable hadith critics. The clear Quran and sound, firmly established hadith attest to them.”
He—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—said:
“They are as follows: Allah Most High is the First, who has always existed, and the Last, who will never cease to exist; the One, the Eternal, the Self-Sufficient, the Generous, the All-Knowing, the Forbearing, the Most High, the Magnificent, the Exalted, the Glorious. His retribution is severe. He originates and restores, and does whatever He wills. He is the Strong, the All-Powerful, the Unassailable, the Helper:

“And so too His other names and attributes: His Self, face, eye, foot, two hands, knowledge, looking, hearing, sight, will, volition, pleasure, anger, love, laughter, wonder, shyness, protective jealousy, dislike, wrath, grasping, spreading out, nearness, proximity, being above, highness, speech, greeting with peace, utterance, calling, manifestation, meeting, descent, ascent, and rising over the Throne; and that He Most High is in heaven, upon His Throne, distinct from His creation.
“Mālik said: ‘Allah is in heaven, and His knowledge is everywhere.’
“Abd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak said: ‘We know our Lord to be above His seven heavens, upon the Throne, distinct from His creation. We do not say, as the Jahmiyya say, that He is here’—and he pointed to the earth.
“Regarding ‘And He is with you wherever you are,’ Sufyān al-Thawrī said: ‘His knowledge.’
“Al-Shāfiʿī said: ‘He is upon His Throne in His heaven, drawing near to His creation however He wills.’
“Ahmad said: ‘He has risen over the Throne and knows every place.’ He descends every night to the lowest heaven however He wills, and He will come on the Day of Resurrection however He wills
