visited his mother’s grave and wept, causing those around him to weep. Then he said, ‘I asked my Lord for permission to seek forgiveness for my mother, but He did not permit me. I asked Him for permission to visit her grave, and He permitted me. So visit graves, for they remind you of death.’”
It is established in the Sahīh, on the authority of Anas:
“A man said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, where is my father?’ He replied, ‘In the Fire.’ When the man turned to leave, he called him back and said, ‘My father and your father are in the Fire.’”
It is also established in the Sahīh, on the authority of Abū Hurayra:
“When this verse was revealed: ‘And warn your closest relatives,’ the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—summoned Quraysh, and they gathered. He addressed them both generally and specifically, saying, ‘O descendants of Kaʿb ibn Luʾayy, save yourselves from the Fire. O descendants of Murra ibn Kaʿb, save yourselves from the Fire. O descendants of ʿAbd Shams, save yourselves from the Fire. O descendants of ʿAbd Manāf, save yourselves from the Fire. O descendants of ʿAbd al-Muttalib, save yourselves from the Fire. O Fātima, save yourself from the Fire. I have no power to protect you from Allah in any way. However, you have ties of kinship with me, which I shall duly maintain.’”
Another narration from him states:
“O people of Quraysh, ransom yourselves from Allah’s punishment, for I cannot protect you from Allah in any way. O descendants of ʿAbd al-Muttalib, I cannot protect you from Allah in any way. O ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muttalib, I cannot protect you from Allah in any way. O Safiyya, aunt of the Messenger of Allah, I cannot protect you from Allah in any way. O Fātima, daughter of the Messenger of Allah, ask me for whatever you wish of my wealth; I cannot protect you from Allah in any way.”
ʿĀʾisha reported:
“When ‘And warn your closest relatives’ was revealed, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—stood up and said, ‘O Fātima, daughter of Muhammad! O Safiyya, daughter of ʿAbd al-Muttalib! I have no power to protect you from Allah in any way. Ask me for whatever you wish of my wealth.’”
Abū Hurayra reported:
“One day, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—stood among us to deliver an address. He spoke of misappropriation, stressing its enormity and the gravity of the matter. Then he said, ‘Let me not find any of you coming on the Day of Resurrection with a bellowing camel on his neck, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, help me!” And I will say, “I can do nothing for you
