in these circumstances to recover this debt from its proceeds. If it can be sold and the debt recovered from its proceeds, the debtor may not be imprisoned. And Allah knows best.

He was asked:

A woman was taken captive. She owned property and had a husband and a brother. They pledged her property to secure a sum of money for her ransom. Her brother took the money and went in search of her, but found that she had been freed without payment. She returned to her hometown, while her brother stayed behind to attend to his own affairs. When she arrived and found her property pledged as security for the money, she said, “Has my property been pledged without my permission?” She denied that her brother had given her any of the money. Is the pledge binding upon her or not?

He replied:
