In the two Sahīh collections, ‘Urwa reports that ‘Ā’isha told him that she asked the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, “Have you ever experienced a day more difficult than the day of Uhud?”

He replied:

“I have suffered much at the hands of your people. The worst I suffered from them was on the day of al-‘Aqaba, when I presented myself to Ibn ‘Abd Yālīl ibn ‘Abd Kulāl, but he did not grant what I sought. I went on my way, weighed down by sorrow, and did not come to myself until I reached Qarn al-Tha‘ālib. I raised my head and saw a cloud shading me. When I looked, I saw Gabriel within it. He called to me and said, ‘Allah has heard what your people said to you and how they responded to you. He has sent you the angel of the mountains so that you may command him to do whatever you wish to them.’

“The angel of the mountains called to me and greeted me with peace. Then he said, ‘O Muhammad, it is as you wish. If you wish, I will crush them between al-Akhshabayn, the two mountains.’”

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Rather, I hope that Allah will bring forth from their descendants people who worship Allah alone, associating nothing with Him.”

There are many similar authentic hadiths mentioning the angels in the heavens, the angels of the air and the mountains, and others. The same applies to the angels who attend to the affairs of the children of Adam. For example, in the hadith agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim—the hadith of the truthful one whose truthfulness is confirmed—the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, says:

“Then the angel is sent to him and commanded to record four matters. He is told, ‘Write down his provision, his lifespan, and whether he will be wretched or blessed.’ Then the soul is breathed into him.”

In the Sahīh, al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib reports:

“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to Hassān, ‘Satirize them—or exchange satire with them—and Gabriel is with you.’”

Also in the Sahīh, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him:

“Reply on my behalf. O Allah, strengthen him
