the army needs a group of merchants to accompany it to sell food, clothing, weapons and other supplies that the army cannot carry, then trade is like a craft. The army is like a community in a town: just as its members must help one another meet their needs through exchanges that cause no harm, so too is this obligatory within the army. Just as the ruler may make jihad obligatory upon a group and order them to travel somewhere for that purpose, he may also order whatever supports it, direct some people to acquire knowledge, and direct others to assume public office. A just ruler must be obeyed in whatever is not known to constitute disobedience to Allah; an unjust ruler must be obeyed in whatever is known to constitute obedience to Allah, such as jihad.
