Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Thus he forbade them to act treacherously, just as he forbade them to misappropriate the spoils. In the two Sahīhs, Ibn ‘Abbās reports from Abū Sufyān ibn Harb that, when Heraclius questioned him about the character of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, he asked:

“Does he act treacherously?”

He replied: “No, he does not act treacherously. We are currently observing a truce with him, and we do not know what he will do during it.”

Abū Sufyān said: “This was the only statement into which I could slip something disparaging.”

Heraclius said in his response: “I asked you whether he acts treacherously, and you stated that he does not. Likewise, the messengers do not act treacherously.”

He thus regarded freedom from treachery as an invariable characteristic of the messengers.

In the two Sahīhs, ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Āmir reports that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“The conditions most deserving of fulfilment are those by which marital relations become lawful for you.”

This shows that stipulated conditions ought to be fulfilled, and that marriage conditions are more deserving of fulfilment than others.

Al-Bukhārī narrated from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Allah Most High said: ‘There are three whose adversary I shall be on the Day of Resurrection: a man who gives his word in My name and then betrays it; a man who sells a free person and consumes the proceeds; and a man who hires a worker, receives his work in full, and does not pay him his wages.’”

He thus condemned the treacherous person. Anyone who stipulates a condition and then breaks it has acted treacherously. The Book and the Sunnah therefore command the fulfilment of covenants, conditions, and solemn pledges
