—both of whom had taken part in Badr—tell the members of the household that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had forbidden leasing land.’ ‘Abd Allāh said, ‘I knew that land was leased during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).’ Then ‘Abd Allāh feared that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) might have issued a ruling on the matter of which he was unaware, so he gave up leasing land.” Muslim narrated this.
Al-Bukhārī also narrated ‘Abd Allāh’s statement at the end of this report, on the authority of Rāfi‘ ibn Khadīj, from his paternal uncle Ẓahīr ibn Rāfi‘:
“Ẓahīr said, ‘The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade us something that had been beneficial to us.’ I asked, ‘What was that? Whatever the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) says is true.’ He said, ‘The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) summoned me and asked, “What do you do with your fields?” I replied, “We lease them, Messenger of Allah, in return for a quarter of the crop or for a number of wasqs (measures) of dates and barley.” He said, “Do not do that. Cultivate them yourselves, let others cultivate them, or keep them.”’ Rāfi‘ said, ‘I replied, “We hear and obey.”’”
Both included this in their Sahīh collections.
Abū Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:
“Whoever has land should cultivate it or allow his brother to use it freely. If he refuses, let him keep his land.”
Both narrated this. Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh reported:
“They used to cultivate it in return for a third or a quarter of the crop. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, ‘Whoever has land should cultivate it or allow his brother to use it freely. If he does neither, let him keep his land.’”
Both narrated this; the wording is al-Bukhārī’s. Muslim’s wording is:
“During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), we used to take land to cultivate in return for a third or a quarter of the crop, together with what grew along the main irrigation channels. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) then stood up to address this matter and said:
