Allah and His Messenger have commanded—though he is in truth wrongfully killed—is a martyr and will be resurrected according to his intention. His killing entails no greater harm than the killing of believers engaged in jihad. If jihad is obligatory even though as many Muslims as Allah wills may be killed, then the killing of Muslims in their ranks out of the necessity of jihad is no graver than this. Indeed, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, commanded anyone compelled to fight in times of strife to break his sword. He is not permitted to fight, even if he is killed, as reported in Sahīh Muslim from Abū Bakrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“There will surely be times of strife. Then, take heed, more times of strife will come; then, take heed, still more times of strife will come. The one who sits during them is better than the one who walks, and the one who walks is better than the one who runs. Take heed: when it comes—or occurs—let whoever has camels go to his camels, whoever has sheep go to his sheep, and whoever has land go to his land.”
He said: A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what about someone who has neither camels, nor sheep, nor land?”
He replied, “Let him take his sword and strike its edge with a stone, then escape if he can. O Allah, have I conveyed the message? O Allah, have I conveyed the message? O Allah, have I conveyed the message?”
A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what if I am compelled and taken to one of the two battle lines—or one of the two factions—and a man strikes me with his sword or his arrow and kills me?”
He replied, “He will bear his own sin and yours, and he will be among the people of the Fire.”
