Exalted is He:
“Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, killing and being killed.”
And (Paradise is the name of the abode that encompasses every delight). These range from the highest—looking upon Allah—to lesser delights that souls desire and eyes delight in, some of which we may know and some of which we may not. As Allah, Exalted is He, said, according to what His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, narrated from Him:
“I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever imagined.”
Some of the reasons for beginning this surah in this way have thus become clear.
Then He, Exalted is He, said:
“O you who believe, remember Allah’s favour upon you when armies came against you, and We sent against them a wind and armies you did not see. And Allah sees all that you do.”
The account, in brief, is as follows: most of the polytheists surrounding the Muslims formed a coalition against them and brought their forces to Medina to eradicate the believers. Quraysh gathered with their allies from Banū Asad, Ashjaʿ, Fazārah, and other tribes of Najd.
The Jews of Qurayzah and al-Nadīr also joined together. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had previously expelled Banū al-Nadīr, as Allah, Exalted is He, mentioned in Surah al-Hashr.
