And when the Muslim armies set out from Egypt, the disgrace and chastisement that became apparent among these people were plain for others to see. When Allah granted Islam its great victory upon the Sultan’s arrival, they were in something like mourning. All this and worse is found among this sect, which was among the foremost causes of Genghis Khan’s invasion of the lands of Islam, Hulagu’s seizure of Baghdad and advance upon Aleppo, the plundering of al-Sālihiyya, and other acts of hostility towards Islam and its people.

For they hold that anyone who does not agree with their misguidance is an unbeliever and an apostate. Whoever regards fuqqāʿ (a foaming barley drink) as lawful is an unbeliever. Whoever wipes over his leather socks is, in their view, an unbeliever. Whoever holds temporary marriage to be forbidden is, in their view, an unbeliever.

Whoever loves Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, or ʿUthmān, or invokes Allah’s pleasure upon them or upon the great majority of the Companions, is, in their view, an unbeliever. Whoever does not believe in their awaited one is, in their view, an unbeliever. This awaited one is a child aged two, three, or five. They claim that he entered the cellar in Samarra more than four hundred years ago, that he knows everything, and that he is Allah’s proof to the people of the earth. Whoever does not believe in him is, in their view, an unbeliever. Yet he has no reality; no such person has ever existed.

They also hold that whoever says that Allah will be seen in the Hereafter is an unbeliever. And whoever says:
