, synagogues, and mosques in which Allah’s name is often mentioned. Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, Almighty.”
“Those who, if We establish them in the land, maintain prayer, give zakah, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong. And to Allah belongs the outcome of all matters.”
Then, after that, He made fighting obligatory for them, saying, Most High:
“Fighting has been prescribed for you, though it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate something that is good for you, and perhaps you love something that is bad for you. Allah knows, while you do not know.”
He reaffirmed this obligation and emphasized the importance of jihad in most of the Medinan surahs. He censured those who abandoned it, describing them as having hypocrisy and sickness in their hearts. He, Most High, said:
“Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your relatives, the wealth you have acquired, the trade whose decline you fear, and the homes you cherish are dearer to you than Allah, His Messenger, and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah brings about His decree. Allah does not guide defiantly disobedient people.”
He, Most High, also said:
“The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, then do not doubt, and strive with their wealth and their lives in Allah’s cause. It is they who are truthful.”
He, Most High, also said:
“But when an unambiguous surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned in it, you see those in whose hearts is sickness looking at you like someone overcome by the throes of death. Yet better for them would be obedience and fitting words. Then, when the matter is resolved, if they were true to Allah, it would be better for them. If you turn away, would you then spread corruption on earth and sever your ties of kinship?”
