Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Abū Dāwūd and others; however, in the two Sahīh collections this is reported as a statement of ʿUmar himself. He delivered it in a sermon from the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying:

“Wine is whatever clouds the mind.”

Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Every intoxicant is wine, and every intoxicant is forbidden.”

Another version reads:

“Every intoxicant is wine, and every wine is forbidden.”

Muslim reported both versions in his Sahīh.

ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Every intoxicant is forbidden. Whatever causes intoxication when consumed in a faraq (a measure of volume) is forbidden even in a palmful.”

Al-Tirmidhī graded this hadith sound.

The compilers of the Sunan collections reported through several chains that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Whatever intoxicates in large quantities is forbidden in small quantities.”

Leading hadith scholars graded it authentic.

Jābir, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

“A man asked the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about a drink made from sorghum that they drank in their land, called mizr. He asked, ‘Does it intoxicate?’

“The man replied, ‘Yes.’

“He said, ‘Every intoxicant is forbidden. Allah has pledged that whoever drinks an intoxicant will be given tīnat al-khabāl to drink.’

“They asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is tīnat al-khabāl?’

“He replied, ‘The sweat of the people of Hell, or the discharge of the people of Hell.’”

Muslim reported it in his Sahīh.

Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Everything that clouds the mind is wine; every intoxicant is forbidden.”

Abū Dāwūd reported it. The hadiths on this subject are numerous and widely transmitted. The Messenger of Allah included
