“While in Yemen, ʿAlī sent the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a small piece of gold still mixed with its earth. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, divided it among four men: al-Aqraʿ ibn Hābis al-Hanzalī, ʿUyaynah ibn Hisn al-Fazārī, ʿAlqamah ibn ʿUlāthah al-ʿĀmirī, chief of Banū Kilāb, and Zayd al-Khayr al-Tāʾī, chief of Banū Nabhān.
He said: “Quraysh and the Ansār became angry and said, ‘He gives to the chiefs of Najd and leaves us out!’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘I did that only to win their hearts.’ Then a man came with a thick beard, prominent cheekbones, deep-set eyes, a protruding forehead and a shaved head. He said, ‘Fear Allah, Muhammad!’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, ‘Who would fear Allah if I disobeyed Him? Does He entrust me with the people of the earth, yet you do not trust me?’”
He said: “Then the man turned away, and one of those present asked permission to kill him—they believed it was Khālid ibn al-Walīd. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘From this man’s stock will come people who recite the Quran, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will kill the people of Islam and leave the idolaters alone. They will pass out of Islam as an arrow passes through its quarry. If I encounter them, I shall surely slay them as ʿĀd were slain.’”
Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave Abū Sufyān ibn Harb, Safwān ibn Umayyah, ʿUyaynah ibn Hisn and al-Aqraʿ ibn Hābis one hundred camels each. He gave ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās less than that, whereupon ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās said:
