over whom He wills. And Allah has power over all things.”

“Whatever Allah has bestowed upon His Messenger from the people of the towns belongs to Allah, the Messenger, his close relatives, orphans, the needy, and the wayfarer, so that wealth may not circulate solely among the rich among you. Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in punishment.”

“It is for the poor Emigrants who were driven from their homes and possessions, seeking Allah’s bounty and pleasure and supporting Allah and His Messenger. They are the ones who are true.”

“And those who had made their home in the city and embraced the faith before their arrival love those who migrate to them. They feel no resentment in their hearts over what the Emigrants have been given, and they give them preference over themselves, even though they too are in need. Those who are protected from their own souls’ stinginess—it is they who will be successful.”

“And those who come after them say, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and let there be no rancour in our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord, You are indeed Most Kind, Most Merciful.’”

Thus Allah, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned the Emigrants, the Helpers, and those who came after them with the qualities He described. This third category therefore includes everyone who follows this course until the Day of Resurrection, just as they are included in His words, Most High:

“And those who believe afterwards, emigrate, and strive alongside you—they are of you.”

And in His words:

“And those who follow them in righteousness.”

And in His words:

“And others among them who have not yet joined them. And He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.”

As for His words:

“You spurred neither horses nor camels to obtain it,”

they mean: you did not
