and give zakat and fear none but Allah.”
Allah Most High says:
“Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, fears Allah, and is mindful of Him—it is they who will be successful.”
He thus makes clear that obedience is due to Allah and His Messenger, whereas fear is due to Allah alone.
Allah Most High says:
“If only they had been content with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and had said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us. Allah will give us of His bounty, and so will His Messenger.’”
Similar to this is His saying:
“Those to whom people said, ‘The people have gathered against you, so fear them,’ but this only increased their faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.’”
The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, firmly established this affirmation of Allah’s oneness among his community and cut off the sources of associating partners with Him. This is the realization of our declaration, “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.” For a deity is one whom hearts worship with the utmost love, reverence, veneration, honour, hope, and fear. He even told them:
“Do not say, ‘Whatever Allah wills and Muhammad wills.’ Rather, say, ‘Whatever Allah wills, then Muhammad wills.’”
A man said to him, “Whatever Allah wills and you will.” He replied:
“Have you made me a rival to Allah? Rather, say, ‘Whatever Allah alone wills.’”
He said:
“Whoever wishes to swear an oath should swear by Allah or remain silent.”
He said:
“Whoever swears by other than Allah has associated a partner with Him.”
He said to Ibn ‘Abbās:
“When you ask, ask Allah; and when you seek help, seek Allah’s help. The pen has dried concerning what you will encounter. If all creation strove to benefit you, they could benefit you only with something Allah has decreed for you. And if they strove to harm you, they could harm you only with something Allah has decreed against you.”
He also said:
“Do not praise me excessively as the Christians praised Jesus, son of Mary. I am only a servant, so say, ‘Allah’s servant and Messenger.’”
He said:
“O Allah, do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped.”
He said:
“Do not make my grave a place of recurring gatherings. Send blessings upon me, for your blessings reach me wherever you may be.”
During his illness, he said:
“May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians; they took the graves of
