that there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, as do the angels and those endowed with knowledge; He upholds justice. There is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Almighty, the All-Wise.”

“Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam.”

Islam encompasses two meanings. The first is submission and obedience, which exclude arrogance. The second is exclusive devotion, as in His words, “and a man belonging wholly to one man,” which excludes associating partners with Allah. It means that the servant submits himself to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, as Allah Most High says:

“Who would turn away from the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself? We certainly chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter he will surely be among the righteous.”

“When his Lord said to him, ‘Submit,’ he said, ‘I have submitted to the Lord of all worlds.’”

“Abraham enjoined this upon his sons, as did Jacob: ‘My sons, Allah has chosen this religion for you, so do not die except as Muslims.’”

Allah Most High also says:

“Say, ‘Indeed, my Lord has guided me to a straight path, an upright religion, the faith of Abraham, who was devoted to Allah alone and was not one of those who associated partners with Him.’”

“Say, ‘Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of all worlds.’”

“‘He has no partner. This I have been commanded, and I am the first of those who submit.’”

The verb for submission is used intransitively, with the preposition li- (“to”), as in these verses and in the words of Allah Most High:

“Turn to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you, for then you will not be helped.”

And His words:

“She said, ‘My Lord, I have indeed wronged myself, and I submit with Solomon to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.’”

And His words:

“Do they seek a religion other than Allah’s, when all those in the heavens and the earth have submitted to Him willingly
