Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

As for his prohibition of such conduct at times of calamity, examples include his saying, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“He is not one of us who slaps his cheeks, tears his garments at the neckline, and cries out with the cries of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance.”

He also said:

“I disavow the woman who shaves her head, wails loudly, or tears her garments in mourning.”

And he said:

“What comes from the eyes and the heart is from Allah, while what comes from the hands and the tongue is from Satan.”

And he said:

“Allah does not hold anyone accountable for the tears of the eyes or the sorrow of the heart, but He punishes or shows mercy because of this”—and he pointed to his tongue. He then said: “Whoever is wailed over is punished because of the wailing over him.”

He stipulated that women, when pledging allegiance, must not wail, and he said:

“If a woman who wails does not repent before her death, she will wear a tunic of scabies and a garment of pitch on the Day of Resurrection.”

Concerning victory, calamities, and joy, he said:

“Allah has prescribed excellence in all things. So when you kill, kill in the best manner, and when you slaughter, slaughter in the best manner. Let each of you sharpen his blade and spare the animal he slaughters unnecessary suffering.”

And he said:

“The people of faith are the most restrained in how they kill.”

And he said:

“Do not mutilate, do not act treacherously, and do not kill a child.”

These are among his commands to uphold justice and refrain from aggression in jihad, in accordance with the saying of the Most High:

“Do not let the hatred of a people lead you to be unjust. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.”

And His saying:

“Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not love the transgressors.”

He also forbade wearing silk, wearing gold rings, and drinking from vessels of gold
