Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

to consult about his personal circumstances a man who understands his condition and what would benefit him, and who can be trusted in this matter. People’s circumstances differ greatly in such matters. And Allah, glorified and exalted is He, knows best.

He was asked:

“About days and nights—for example, someone saying that travel is disliked on Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday; that cutting fabric, sewing or spinning is disliked on these days; or that intercourse is disliked on a particular night, for fear of harm to the child?”

He replied:

All praise is due to Allah. All of this is false and has no basis. Rather, when a man has sought Allah’s guidance concerning a permissible act, let him do it whenever it is convenient. Cutting fabric, sewing, spinning and similar activities are not disliked on any day, nor is intercourse disliked on any night or day.

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade belief in ill omens, as recorded in the Sahīh from Mu‘āwiya ibn al-Hakam al-Sulamī, who said:

“I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, some of us visit soothsayers.’

“He said, ‘Then do not visit them.’

“I said, ‘Some of us take things as ill omens.’

“He said, ‘That is something one of you feels within himself, but it must not deter you.’”

Since he forbade a person to let an ill omen deter him from what he had resolved to do, how, then, could particular days and nights be grounds for such avoidance?
