He was also asked:

Are the shrines bearing the names of ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib and his son al-Husayn—may Allah be pleased with them both—authentic or not? And where has ‘Alī’s grave been reliably established to be?

He answered:

Some of these well-known shrines are unquestionably falsely attributed, such as the shrine outside Damascus attributed to Ubayy ibn Ka‘b, the shrine outside that city attributed to Uways al-Qaranī, and the shrine in Egypt attributed to al-Husayn—may Allah be pleased with him. There are many other such shrines in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, and elsewhere, too numerous to list. Indeed, a group of scholars, including ‘Abd al-‘Azīz al-Kinānī, stated: “None of these graves attributed to the prophets is authentically identified except the grave of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.” Other scholars have also affirmed the location of the grave of Abraham, Allah’s intimate friend, peace be upon him.

As for the “shrine of ‘Alī,” the overwhelming majority of scholars hold that it is not his grave. It has even been said that it is the grave of al-Mughīrah ibn Shu‘bah.
