know where their graves are—may Allah Most High be pleased with them all.
It has already been mentioned that “the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, cursed the Jews and Christians who took the graves of their prophets as places of worship,” along with other hadiths to this effect.
He—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked about the “graves of the prophets,” peace and blessings be upon them:
Are they the graves that people visit today, such as the graves of Noah, Abraham—Allah’s intimate friend—Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Jonah, Elijah, Elisha, Shu‘ayb, Moses, and Zechariah, whose grave is in the mosque of Damascus? And where is the grave of ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib? Are any of these graves authentically identified or not?
He answered:
All praise is due to Allah. The grave whose location is agreed upon is that of our Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. There is disagreement concerning the grave of Abraham, Allah’s intimate friend, but the correct view, held by the majority, is that it is indeed his grave. As for Jonah, Elijah, Shu‘ayb, and Zechariah, the locations of their graves are unknown. The grave of ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib is at the governor’s palace in Kūfah, and the grave of Mu‘āwiyah is the one that the common people say is the grave of Hūd. And Allah knows best.
