those whose authenticity is not established by consensus—apart from the graves of our Prophet, Abraham the Friend of Allah, and Moses. This is an honor bestowed upon Muhammad and his community. Allah has safeguarded the prophets’ graves against being made places of worship in a way unparalleled among earlier nations, for Muhammad and his community upheld monotheism as no others had done. They subdued the worshippers of idols, crosses, and fire.
Just as Allah suppressed polytheism through them, so through Muhammad and his community He manifested faith in the prophets, reverence for them and for what they brought, and public remembrance of them in the finest manner, to a degree unparalleled in any other nation. In the Quran, He commands that they be remembered, as in His words, Exalted is He:
“Mention in the Book Abraham. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.”
“Mention in the Book Moses. Indeed, he was chosen, and he was a messenger and a prophet.”
And the subsequent verses. He also says:
“Be patient with what they say, and remember Our servant David, a man of strength. Indeed, he constantly turned to Allah.”
After him, He mentions Solomon, continuing to His words:
“And remember Our servant Job, when he called upon his Lord.”
Then to His words:
“And remember Our servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, men of strength and insight.”
Then to His words:
“And remember Ishmael, Elisha, and Dhū al-Kifl.”
Thus, He commanded that these prophets be remembered. As for Moses and, before him, Noah, Hūd, and Sālih, they had already been mentioned in His words, Exalted is He:
“Before them, the people of Noah denied the truth, as did ʿĀd and Pharaoh of the stakes,
and Thamūd, the people of Lot, and the people of the thicket. Those were the confederates.
Every one of them rejected the messengers, so My punishment became due.”
He also commanded that Moses and others be remembered in a surah
