outrageous reports on the authority of trustworthy narrators.”

Abū al-Faraj ibn al-Jawzī included this hadith in his Book of Fabricated Reports and narrated it through Abū Hātim ibn Hibbān:

“Ahmad ibn ‘Ubayd narrated to us: Muhammad ibn al-Nu‘mān narrated to us: My grandfather narrated to us, from Mālik.”

Abū al-Faraj then said: “Abū Hātim said, ‘Al-Nu‘mān transmits outrageous reports on the authority of trustworthy narrators.’ Al-Dāraqutnī said, ‘The fault in this hadith lies with Muhammad ibn Muhammad, not with Nu‘mān.’”

As for the other report:

“Whoever visits me and my father in the same year, I guarantee him Paradise from Allah,”

it appears in none of the books, whether with a fabricated chain of transmission or otherwise. It has been said that this was unheard of among Muslims until they conquered Jerusalem in the time of Saladin. Thus, none of the scholars mentioned either of these two reports, whether as supporting evidence or as a basis for their conclusions. This is unlike the report mentioned earlier, which a number of scholars cited and transmitted. It is known through Hafs ibn Sulaymān al-Ghādirī, the associate of ‘Āsim, from Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Whoever performs Hajj and then visits me after my death, it is as though he visited me during my lifetime.”

Hadith scholars agree in criticizing this Hafs’s transmission of hadith, but not his Quranic recitation. Al-Bayhaqī said in Shu‘ab al-Īmān (Branches of Faith):

“Hafs ibn Abī Dāwūd—who is weak—narrated from Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, from Mujāhid, from
