this basis all the early generations proceeded. Were we to recount all the statements of the early generations on this subject that we have encountered, we would go beyond the purpose of this answer. Anyone whose aim is truth and making clear what is right will find what we have presented sufficient. As for anyone intent on disputation, idle controversy, and obstinate denial, a lengthier discussion would only lead him further from the straight path. Allah alone grants success.

What we have asserted concerning the position of the early generations—may Allah be pleased with them—has been established by what we have transmitted from them, both generally and in detail, and by the acknowledgment of all the scholars versed in transmitted knowledge.

I know of none of them who disagreed on this matter. Indeed, I have received reports that even some of their leading scholars who adopted reinterpretation of these verses and reports acknowledged that the position of the early generations concerning them was as we have stated. I also found this acknowledgment in a book by one of their teachers, who said:

“Our scholars differed concerning the reports about the divine attributes. Some let them stand as they came, without explanation or reinterpretation, while denying any resemblance to created beings. This is the position of the early generations.”

Thus, the acknowledgment of the opposing party establishes consensus on the correctness of what we have stated. Praise be to Allah. How excellent are the words reported from ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn Abī Salama, who said:

“Adhere firmly to the Sunnah, for, by Allah’s permission, it will safeguard you. The Sunnah was established to be followed and to serve as the limit beyond which one does not venture. Those who established it knew the slips, errors, folly, and excessive probing involved in departing from it. Be content for yourself with what they were content with for themselves. For they stopped where they did on the basis of knowledge, and refrained with penetrating insight. They were better able to uncover these matters, and better qualified to expound them in detail, had that been appropriate.
