Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Then, when the heretics gained power, they ordered shrines to be built and mosques to be left unused, arguing that Friday and congregational prayers could only be performed behind the infallible imam. They transmitted lies concerning the lighting and veneration of shrines and supplication beside them, the like of which I have not encountered among the fabrications of the People of the Book that I have examined. Their leader, Ibn al-Nu'mān, even wrote a book entitled “The Rites of Pilgrimage to Shrines.” In it they fabricated lies about the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his household, thereby altering his religion and changing his faith.

They introduced polytheism, which contradicts the affirmation of Allah’s oneness, thus combining polytheism with lying, just as Allah has linked the two in several passages, including His words:

“And shun false speech, being true to Allah, associating no partners with Him.”

In an authentic report, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “False testimony is equivalent to associating partners with Allah.” He said this twice, then recited this verse.

Allah Most High also says:

“Those who took the calf for worship will incur wrath from their Lord and humiliation in this worldly life. Thus do We recompense those who fabricate lies.”

And Allah Most High says:

“On the Day He calls them and says, ‘Where are those you claimed were My partners?’”

“And We will bring forth a witness from every community and say, ‘Produce your proof.’ Then they will know that the truth belongs to Allah, and whatever they used to fabricate will fail them.”

This right belongs to Allah, as is established in an authentic report that the Prophet said to Mu'ādh ibn Jabal:

“O Mu'ādh, do you know what Allah’s right over His servants is?”

He replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”

He said, “His right over His servants is that they worship Him and associate nothing with Him. O Mu'ādh, do you know what
