graves as places of worship and praying in graveyards are very numerous. For example, the two Sahīh collections and the Sunan collections report from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“May Allah destroy the Jews! They took the graves of their prophets as places of worship.”

Abdullāh ibn Masʿūd said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say:

“Among the worst of people are those who are still alive when the Hour overtakes them, and those who take graves as places of worship.”

This was narrated by Ahmad in al-Musnad and by Abū Hātim ibn Hibbān in his Sahīh.

Ibn ʿAbbās said:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, cursed women who visit graves and those who establish places of worship and lamps over them.”

This was narrated by Ahmad in al-Musnad, the compilers of the four Sunan collections, and Abū Hātim ibn Hibbān in his Sahīh.

He also narrated in his Sahīh that ʿĀʾishah said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“May Allah curse those who took the graves of their prophets as places of worship.”

The two Sahīh collections report that Ibn ʿUmar said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Offer some of your prayers in your homes, and do not turn them into graves.”

Sahīh Muslim reports from Abū Marthad al-Ghanawī that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Do not pray facing graves, and do not sit on them.”

Abdullāh ibn ʿAmr said:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade praying in graveyards.”

Abū Hātim narrated this in his Sahīh. He also narrated from Anas:

“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade praying among graves.”
