This meaning is widely reported from him through several chains in the Sahīh, Sunan, and Musnad collections.
In Sahīh Muslim, Jundub reports that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said five days before his death:
“Those before you used to take graves—or he said, the graves of their prophets—as places of worship. Beware! Do not take graves as places of worship, for I forbid you to do so.”
The same report includes:
“If I were to take anyone on earth as an intimate friend, I would take Abū Bakr as an intimate friend. But your companion is Allah’s intimate friend.”
This meaning is reported through several chains in the two Sahīh collections. The report also includes:
“Let every small doorway opening into the mosque be sealed, except Abū Bakr’s doorway.”
He clarified these two matters, both of which have been mass-transmitted from him, and brought them together five days before his death: mentioning the excellence of Abū Bakr al-Siddīq and forbidding the taking of graves as places of worship. Together, they cut off the very source of the polytheism through which religion was corrupted and the religion of the polytheists came to prevail.
For Allah said in His Book concerning the people of Noah:
“And they said, ‘Never abandon your gods; never abandon Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, or Nasr.’ And they have already led many astray.”
Al-Bukhārī narrated in his Sahīh, through his chain of transmission, that Ibn ʿAbbās said:
“The idols that had existed among the people of Noah came to be worshipped among the Arabs. Wadd belonged to Kalb at Dūmat al-Jandal; Suwāʿ belonged to Hudhayl; Yaghūth belonged to Murād, then to Banū Ghutayf at al-Jarf near Sabaʾ; Yaʿūq belonged to Hamdān; and Nasr belonged to Himyar, to the clan of Dhī
