Offering an Eid sacrifice, a sacrifice for a newborn, or a Hajj sacrifice is preferable to giving its price in charity. If someone has money with which he wishes to draw closer to Allah, he may use it to offer an Eid sacrifice. Eating from the Eid sacrifice is preferable to giving it away in charity, and offering a Hajj sacrifice in Mecca is preferable to giving charity there.
If someone has bound himself by a vow to offer a sacrificial animal, then purchases one on credit, and it is sold before slaughter, he must replace it with a sheep. If, however, he purchases a sacrificial animal and it develops a defect before slaughter, he should slaughter it according to one of the two scholarly opinions. If it develops a defect during slaughter, it suffices in both cases.
