arrived, we circumambulated the Kaaba and passed between al-Safā and al-Marwah. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, instructed those of us who had not brought sacrificial animals to leave ihram. We asked, ‘To what extent are we released from ihram?’ He replied, ‘Completely.’ So we had relations with our wives, applied perfume, and put on our ordinary clothes, although only four nights remained before the day at Arafat. Then we entered ihram on the Day of al-Tarwiyah.

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then went in to Ā’ishah and found her weeping. He asked, ‘What is the matter?’ She replied, ‘I have begun menstruating. The people have left ihram, but I have not, nor have I circumambulated the House, and now they are setting out for Hajj.’ He said, ‘This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. Bathe, then enter ihram for Hajj.’ She did so and attended the prescribed stations. Once she became free of menstruation, she circumambulated the House and passed between al-Safā and al-Marwah. He then said, ‘You have now left ihram for both your Hajj and your Umrah.’

“She said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I still feel troubled that I did not circumambulate the House when I performed Hajj.’ He said, ‘Take her, Abd al-Rahmān, and have her perform Umrah from al-Tan‘īm.’ That was on the night of al-Hasbah.”

In Muslim’s version: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was accommodating: when she desired something, he would go along with her wishes. So he sent her with Abd al-Rahmān, and she entered ihram for Umrah from al-Tan‘īm.”

Muslim also related in his Sahīh, through Tāwūs, from Ā’ishah:
