Shaykh al-Islām was also asked:
About the difficulty caused by menstruation, which affects half the women performing Hajj, and the many different circumstances in which it occurs: some are menstruating when they enter ihrām, while others begin menstruating during the days of Tashrīq.
The first question:
A woman menstruates at the beginning of the month and has no opportunity to circumambulate except while menstruating. When standing at ʿArafah, she notices some of the yellowish and brownish discharge that she sees after the white discharge. What is the ruling concerning this?
The second question:
A woman begins menstruating sometime between the fifth and ninth, and her menstruation continues until the seventeenth or later. She stood at ʿArafah, performed the stoning, and performed the circumambulation of ifādah, all while menstruating, and was unable to perform ʿumrah.
The third question:
A woman stood at ʿArafah and stoned the pillars, intending to perform the circumambulation of ifādah. However, she began menstruating before the circumambulation, so she did not perform it and concealed the matter. She had also intended to perform ʿumrah but did not do so. She returned without performing either the circumambulation or ʿumrah, and without offering a sacrificial animal.
He replied—may Allah have mercy on him:
