and it is established that most of those reported to have said that “he performed Hajj on its own” also said that “he performed tamattu‘, combining ‘umrah with Hajj.” It is established that Anas ibn Mālik said:

“I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: ‘Here I am, answering Your call for ‘umrah and Hajj.’”

It is also established that ‘Umar was informed that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Someone came to me from my Lord—meaning in the valley of al-‘Aqīq—and said: ‘Say: An ‘umrah combined with Hajj.’”

No one other than ‘Umar and Anas related the actual words with which the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, entered ihram. Hence Imam Ahmad said: “I have no doubt that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, combined Hajj and ‘umrah under a single ihram.”

As for the Companions’ wording, tamattu‘—combining ‘umrah with Hajj—describes anyone who performs ‘umrah during the months of Hajj and performs Hajj that same year, whether he combines them under a single ihram or leaves ihram between them. This broader sense of tamattu‘ includes qirān, combining both rites under a single ihram. Accordingly, most jurists hold that someone performing qirān must make a sacrificial offering, including him within the general scope of Allah’s words:

“Whoever combines ‘umrah with Hajj must offer whatever sacrificial animal he can afford.”

Nevertheless, the term “tamattu‘” may be used specifically for someone who performs ‘umrah and then enters ihram for Hajj after completing his ‘umrah. Thus, those Companions who said that “he performed tamattu‘, combining ‘umrah with Hajj” did not mean that he had left ihram. Rather, they meant that he combined the two rites during his pilgrimage, performing ‘umrah during the months of Hajj. They did not, however, specify whether he entered ihram for ‘umrah before circumambulating the House and traversing between the two hills
