Section: Hajj
As for Hajj, they followed the established teachings of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, concerning its performance and rulings.
It is established through mass-transmitted reports known to specialist hadith scholars, related through numerous channels in the two Sahīh collections and elsewhere, that:
“When he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, performed the Farewell Pilgrimage, he and the Muslims entered ihrām (ritual consecration) at Dhū al-Hulayfah. He said, ‘Whoever wishes to enter ihrām for ʿumrah may do so; whoever wishes to enter ihrām for Hajj may do so; and whoever wishes to enter ihrām for both ʿumrah and Hajj may do so.’”
When they arrived, circumambulated the House, and went between al-Safā and al-Marwah, he instructed all the Muslims who had performed Hajj with him to leave ihrām and make their pilgrimage an ʿumrah instead, except those who had brought sacrificial animals: they were not to leave ihrām until the sacrificial animals reached their appointed place of sacrifice. Some of them questioned him about this, and he became angry. He said:
“Consider what I have commanded you to do, and do it.”
He himself, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had brought sacrificial animals, so he did not leave ihrām.
