Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

exalted is He:

“And they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us.’”

He did not say, “and His Messenger.” And they said:

“To Allah alone we turn in hope.”

They did not add “and His Messenger” here, as He did when speaking of giving. Rather, this resembles His words:

“So when you have finished, strive diligently, and to your Lord alone turn in longing.”

Allah Most High says:

“Those to whom people said, ‘The people have gathered against you, so fear them,’ but this only increased their faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee.’”

In Sahīh al-Bukhārī, Ibn ʿAbbās is reported to have said: “‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee’ was said by Abraham when he was cast into the fire, and by Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when people told them, ‘The people have gathered against you, so fear them.’ This only increased their faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee.’”

Allah Most High also says:

“O Prophet, Allah is sufficient for you and for the believers who follow you.”

That is, Allah alone is sufficient for you and for the believers who follow you. Whoever says, “Allah and the believers are sufficient for you,” has gone astray; indeed, his statement is of the kind made by the disbelievers. Allah alone is sufficient for everyone who believes in Him. To be sufficient means to meet every need, as Allah Most High says:

“Is Allah not sufficient for His servant?”

Allah Most High has a right in which no created being shares: worship, sincere devotion, reliance, fear, hope, pilgrimage, prayer, zakāh, fasting, and charity.

The Messenger also has rights: believing in him, obeying him, following his sunnah, befriending those he befriends and opposing those he opposes, and loving him more than one’s family, wealth, and oneself. As he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “By Him in whose hand is my soul,
