Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

—may Allah be pleased with him—saw two men raising their voices in the mosque and said:

“If I knew that you were residents of this city, I would give you a painful beating. Voices must not be raised in his mosque.”

Thus, what some ignorant members of the public do after prayer—calling out loudly, “Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah”—is among the most reprehensible practices. None of the early generations did anything of this kind after concluding the prayer, whether loudly or quietly. Rather, what is prescribed is the worshipper’s saying during the prayer, “Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy and blessings of Allah.” Likewise, invoking blessings upon him is prescribed at every time and in every place.

It is authentically reported that he said:

“Whoever invokes blessings upon me once, Allah will bless him ten times in return.”

The Musnad reports:

“A man said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, shall I devote a third of my supplication to invoking blessings upon you?’ He replied, ‘Then Allah will take care of a third of your affairs.’ He said, ‘Shall I devote two-thirds of my supplication to invoking blessings upon you?’ He replied, ‘Then Allah will take care of two-thirds of your affairs.’ He said, ‘Shall I devote all my supplication to invoking blessings upon you?’ He replied, ‘Then Allah will take care of whatever concerns you in the affairs of this world and the Hereafter.’”

The Sunan collections report that he said:

“Do not make my grave a place of recurring gatherings. Invoke blessings upon me wherever you may be, for your blessings reach me.”

Abdullāh ibn Hasan, the leading elder among the descendants of al-Hasan in his time, saw a man repeatedly visiting the grave of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to supplicate there. He said: Sir, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Do not make my grave a place of recurring gatherings. Invoke blessings upon me wherever you may be, for
