This also includes moderation in following the Sunnah and adhering to it as it has come down—without addition or omission—as in discussions of (the Quran) and (the other attributes).

The position of the early generations of the Muslim community and Ahl al-Sunnah is that the Quran is the speech of Allah, revealed and uncreated. It originated from Him and will return to Him. More than one of the early scholars stated this. It is narrated through Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah that ʿAmr ibn Dīnār—one of the eminent Successors—said: “I have always heard people saying this.”

The Quran that Allah revealed to His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is this very Quran that Muslims recite and write in their copies. It is Allah’s speech, not the speech of anyone else, even though His servants recite and convey it through their movements and voices. Speech is attributed to its original speaker, not to the person who conveys and transmits it. Allah Most High says:

“And if any of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the speech of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety.”

This Quran is contained in the written copies, as Allah Most High says:

“Rather, it is a glorious Quran, in a Preserved Tablet.”

And Allah Most High says:

“Reciting purified pages, containing upright writings.”

And He says:

“Indeed, it is a noble Quran, in a well-guarded Book.”

The Quran is Allah’s speech in its letters, arrangement, and meanings. All of these are included in the Quran and in Allah’s speech. The vocalization of the letters is integral to their completeness, as the Prophet said
