After that, he enters Mecca and performs tawāf al-ifādah, the main circumambulation of Hajj, on the Day of Sacrifice if possible. Otherwise, he performs it later, though it should be during the days of Tashrīq, since delaying it beyond those days is a matter of scholarly disagreement. He then performs the sa‘y of Hajj between al-Safā and al-Marwah. A pilgrim performing ifrād (Hajj alone) need only perform sa‘y once. According to the majority of scholars, the same applies to one performing qirān (Hajj and ‘umrah combined in a single ihram). It also applies to one performing tamattu‘ (‘umrah followed by Hajj, with release from ihram between them), according to the soundest scholarly view. This is also the sounder of the two reports from Ahmad: he need only perform sa‘y once. The Companions who performed tamattu‘ with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, only went between al-Safā and al-Marwah once, before the standing at ‘Arafāt.
Thus, if the pilgrim performing tamattu‘ relies on his first sa‘y, that suffices, just as it suffices for those performing ifrād and qirān. ‘Abd Allāh ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal likewise said:
“My father was asked, ‘How many times does a pilgrim performing tamattu‘ perform sa‘y between al-Safā and al-Marwah?’
“He replied, ‘If he makes the circuits twice—meaning around the House and between al-Safā and al-Marwah—that is better. If he makes them once, there is no harm; but I prefer that he make them twice.’”
Ahmad said: “Al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us: al-Awzā‘ī narrated to us, from ‘Atā’, from Ibn ‘Abbās, that he used to say: ‘For a pilgrim performing ifrād or tamattu‘, one tawāf around the House and one sa‘y between al-Safā and al-Marwah suffice.’”
Scholars have differed concerning what the Companions who performed tamattu‘ with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did upon returning from ‘Arafah, although everyone agrees that they had initially gone around the House and between al-Safā and al-Marwah. One view is that they also performed sa‘y after tawāf al-ifādah.
