—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—into ‘Arafāt, and he departed by the route of al-Ma’zimayn. During the pilgrimage rites and on the Eids, he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would go by one route and return by another. Thus, he entered through the upper mountain pass and left through the lower pass. He entered the Sacred Mosque through the Gate of Banū Shaybah and, after the farewell circumambulation, left through what is now the Gate of Hazwarah. He entered ‘Arafāt by the route of Dabb and departed by the route of al-Ma’zimayn. On the day of Eid, he approached Jamrat al-‘Aqabah by the middle road, which leads outside Minā before turning left towards the stoning pillar. Then, when he returned to his place in Minā, where he slaughtered his sacrificial animals and shaved his head, he took the previously mentioned road, which most people use today.

The pilgrim should delay Maghrib until he prays it together with ‘Ishā’ at Muzdalifah. He should not jostle others, but if he finds an open stretch, he should quicken his pace. Upon reaching Muzdalifah, he should pray Maghrib before making the camels kneel, if possible. Once they have made the camels kneel, they should pray ‘Ishā’. There is no harm in delaying ‘Ishā’.

He should spend the night at Muzdalifah. The whole of Muzdalifah is called the Sacred Monument, and it extends from the two passes of ‘Arafah to the bed of the Muhassir valley. Between every two sacred sites lies a boundary area belonging to neither: between ‘Arafah and Muzdalifah lies the bed of the ‘Uranah valley, and between Muzdalifah and Minā lies the bed of the Muhassir valley.

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “All of ‘Arafah is a place for the standing, but stay clear of the bed of the ‘Uranah valley; and all of Muzdalifah
