during the first three circuits. This jogging consists of walking briskly with short steps. If crowding prevents him from jogging, moving to the edge of the circumambulation area and jogging is better than remaining close to the House without jogging. If, however, he can remain close to the House while fully observing the Sunnah, that is preferable. He may circumambulate beyond the dome of Zamzam and the covered porticoes beyond it that adjoin the mosque’s walls. If someone prays in the mosque while people circumambulate in front of him, this is not disliked, whether a man or a woman passes before him. This is one of the rulings specific to Mecca.

It is also recommended that he leave his right shoulder uncovered during this circumambulation. This means exposing his right upper arm by passing the middle of his upper garment beneath his right armpit and placing both ends over his left shoulder. If he omits jogging and uncovering his right shoulder, he owes nothing.

During circumambulation, it is recommended that he remember Allah Most High and supplicate to Him with prescribed supplications. There is no harm in reciting the Quran quietly. No fixed formula of remembrance for circumambulation has been transmitted from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—whether through his commands, words, or instruction. Rather, one may offer any of the prescribed supplications. The particular supplication that many people recite beneath the waterspout, and similar practices, have no basis.

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—would conclude his circumambulation between the two corners by saying:

“Our Lord, grant us good in this world, and in the Hereafter
