And those who used to invoke other gods alongside Allah—such as the sun, the moon, the stars, Ezra, the Messiah, the angels, al-Lāt, al-‘Uzzā, Manāt, the third, the other one, Yaghūth, Ya‘ūq, Nasr, or others—did not believe that they created living beings, sent down rain, or caused plants to grow. Rather, they worshipped the prophets, angels, stars, jinn, and statues representing them, or worshipped their graves, saying, “We worship them only so that they may bring us nearer to Allah.” They also said, “They are our intercessors with Allah.” So Allah sent His messengers to forbid invoking anyone besides Him, whether in worship or in appeals for deliverance.
Allah Most High said:
“Say, ‘Call upon those whom you claim to be gods besides Him. They have no power to remove harm from you or to divert it.’”
“Those whom they invoke themselves seek a means of drawing near to their Lord, seeking to be closest to Him. They hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, your Lord’s punishment is to be feared.”
Some of the early generations said that there were people who invoked the Messiah, Ezra, and the angels. Allah therefore said to them: “Those whom you invoke draw near to Me just as you draw near, hope for My mercy just as you hope for My mercy, and fear My punishment just as you fear My punishment.”
Allah Most High also said:
“Say, ‘Call upon those whom you claim to be gods besides Allah. They possess not even an atom’s weight in the heavens or on earth. They have no share in either, nor does He have any helper among them.’”
“Intercession before Him benefits no one except those for whom He has given permission.”
Thus He, glorified be He, declared that whatever is invoked besides Allah does not possess even an atom’s weight
