Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Shaykh al-Islām, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

As for the Yemeni Corner, it is not to be kissed according to the correct view. As for the other sides of the House, the two northern corners, and the Station of Abraham, they are neither to be kissed nor rubbed with the hands, by agreement of the Muslims who follow the mass-transmitted Sunnah of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Since rubbing these places and kissing them is not recommended, it is all the more fitting that places of lesser standing should neither be kissed nor rubbed.

The scholars agree that someone greeting the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, at his grave is not recommended to kiss the chamber or rub his hands over it, lest the dwelling of a created being be made to resemble the House of the Creator. Moreover, he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“O Allah, do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped.”

He also said:

“Do not make my grave a site of recurring observance.”

And he said:

“Those before you used to take graves as places of worship. Beware! Do not take graves as places of worship, for I forbid you to do so.”

If this is the Muslims’ religious practice regarding the grave of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who is the foremost of Adam’s descendants, then it is all the more fitting that anyone else’s grave should neither be kissed nor touched. Some scholars have reported a less sound, dissenting view on this matter. However, I know of no disagreement about it among the imams whose teachings are followed and the early generations who preceded us. And Allah, glorified is He, knows best.
