those performing umrah before Hajj with a break in ihrām between them, at the outset. Moreover, the authentic hadiths concerning her case establish that:

“When she circumambulated the House and traversed between Safā and Marwa on the Day of Sacrifice, he said to her, ‘You have now left ihrām,’ and, ‘Your circumambulation suffices for your Hajj and your umrah.’”

They also establish that she was not required to make up that umrah. This demonstrates that a single circumambulation of the House and a single traversal between Safā and Marwa suffice for someone combining Hajj and umrah, just as they suffice for someone performing Hajj alone. This is especially so since ʿĀ’isha performed no circumambulation except the arrival circumambulation; rather, she did not circumambulate until after standing at ʿArafa, and she also performed the traversal. If the principal Hajj circumambulation and the traversal following it suffice for someone combining Hajj and umrah, then the arrival circumambulation together with the principal Hajj circumambulation, and a single traversal accompanying either of them, must suffice all the more.

Further evidence is that all the Companions who related the account of the pilgrimage of Allah’s Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, reported that, once the Companions had circumambulated the House and traversed between Safā and Marwa, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, instructed them to leave ihrām, except those who had brought sacrificial animals: they were not to leave ihrām until the Day of Sacrifice. None of them reported that any Companion circumambulated and traversed, then circumambulated and traversed again. It is well known that an occurrence of this kind would have given people ample reason and incentive to report it. Since none of the Companions reported it, we know that it did not occur.

Those who hold that view rely chiefly on a report transmitted by the Kufans from ʿAlī and another report from Ibn Masʿūd. Yet Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad related from his father, Muhammad ibn ʿAlī, that he had preserved a report from ʿAlī ibn Abī Tālib prescribing a single traversal between Safā and Marwa for someone combining Hajj and umrah, contrary to what is preserved by the people of
